how did an economics graduate working in hospitality get into art direction?
Maybe it was just a case of trial and error; a desire for a more creative outlet. And to some extent, I believe that to be true. I determined confining myself to creating models in SPSS in some financial math dungeon would hinder my passion for creative expression (although I’ll admit I enjoyed the problem solving). Crafting a cocktail allowed for self-expression, however, a drink only exists ‘till it doesn’t. I can sum up this thought with a sentence: Perhaps I chose advertising to create something beautiful that has the potential to live on in perpetuity.
But I believe it goes deeper than that.
From a young age we were encouraged to draw in school. My work was primarily streetscapes, with every store, vehicle and billboard branded to a tee. This was much to the disappointment of my Waldorf school who would have had us believe that branding and advertising was the work of the devil. But I never believed that. I felt that it could be beautiful. That it could be inspiring. So, I believe that advertising was subconsciously always where I wanted to be, even if it took me a while to realize it.
I’m eager to connect and share with others, building relationships and inspiring each other to create better work. I look forward to meeting you.
Cheers,
Iain
